As parent volunteers, the CALM Society partners with the Abington School District to support V.I.B.E (Voices Involved in promoting Black Excellence). V.I.B.E. is a program offered at Abington Junior High School to encourage positive self-identity and to foster leadership development among young males.
The purpose of V.I.B.E. is for young men to learn how to advocate for themselves in an academically challenging environment, and to help develop a positive voice within the school community.
Discussion groups throughout the year focus on a variety of topics including: reflecting upon self, defining personal goals, developing leadership skills, identifying leadership opportunities, celebrating diversity and inclusion for all, examining cultural backgrounds, and understanding social expectations.
These discussions, coupled with guest speakers, after school field trips and seminars help to encourage growth both academically and socially. The life lessons learned through V.I.B.E. will have a lasting and positive effect on each and every member.
The V.I.B.E. Elementary B.r.i.d.g.e (Boys Reiterating Ideas Developed for Growing Educationally)
Program is where the V.I.B.E. members from A.J.H.S take the skills, lessons and experiences that they have garnered as mentees, and turn around and become mentors to 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th grade school students at Overlook Elementary. The Bridge Program, yet another brainchild of that dynamic duo of James & Sack, is a resounding success and a pure demonstration of peer-to-peer mentoring as well as mentor-to-mentee.
The young men teach the kiddies lessons on personal presentation, goal setting, and perseverance. By enforcing the mantra of “The Road to Success Begins Now” and demonstrating that everyone makes mistakes, but leaders learn from their mistakes and continue to strive for excellence, the V.I.B.E members conduct mini workshops with the skill of seasoned presenters.
V.I.B.E. seeks to develop and nurture excellence in adolescent African American males. The goals of this program are to:
Enhance students’ cultural competency.
Challenge students to find their voice and life purpose by developing a positive self image.
Encourage educational goal setting along with providing opportunities for service learning and community service.
Help students develop self-advocacy skills by immersing students in leadership training
Teach students skills that will enable them to appropriately deal with conflicts and challenges while developing strategies for combating peer pressure
