As parent volunteers, the CALM Society also partners with the Abington School District to support I.M.A.G.I.N.E (I’m A Girl, Intelligent, Noble, and Educated). I.M.A.G.I.N.E is a sister program to the AJHS V.I.B.E. (Voices Involved in promoting Black Excellence) group for boys. The purpose of the group is to provide girls with a forum to self-advocate, improve self-image and to generally enrich their lives. We hope to assist them in embracing their talents and goals, as well as to address issues that may interfere with optimal success in the academic environment.
The focus topics include self-image, self-confidence, resisting peer pressure and academic excellence – with an emphasis on addressing social issues that interfere with performance. The girls participate in discussion groups, attend events, and have opportunities to be exposed to positive role models.
The I.M.A.G.I.N.E.program is now available at Overlook Elementary School. This program allows IMAGINE members from A.J.H.S to take the skills, lessons and experiences that they have garnered as mentees, and turn around and become mentors to 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th grade school students at Overlook Elementary.
