CALM Society Scholarships Honor Kareem Guess
My name is Kareem Guess, and I am a 2007 graduate of Upper Dublin High School in Fort Washington, PA. When my sister and I were quite young, our father abandoned us after our parents divorced. My mom became the sole provider for our family. In addition to providing for us, she went to college part-time and completed her degree while working full-time. She always reminded us that our ancestors strived for excellence and that we should do the same. Our family suffered a difficult blow when I was diagnosed with cancer in 2001. In the many months of my treatment, my mom had to take a leave of absence from work to care for me. This created a financial hardship for us. Fortunately, my mom held on to her faith and with the help of my family and church, we were able to persevere during that difficult period.
I served as an active member of several clubs and organizations. I believe that community service and extra curricular involvement are an integral part of youth development. My church, Salem Baptist Church of Jenkintown, my school, and my community sponsored these activities. At church, I served as a Jr. Trustee, Chapel Choir member, church school student and youth usher – vice president. In school I involved myself in the African American Student Association and Gusto Warriors, a fitness and community service group. In the community I served by feeding the homeless, cleaning and painting Philadelphia schools, and participating in teen summits. Each year I participated in the Relay for Life. I am active with the Tavis Smiley Youth to Leader Program, Philadelphia Youth Action and the NAACP. To assist my family financially, I worked as a food service worker at Fort Washington Estates, an assisted living community, throughout high school.
My career goal is to become one of the best Automotive Engineers in the industry. I am presently attending Tuskegee University and majoring in Mechanical Engineering. While in college I will continue to participate in community service.
