It was a bright windy morning in Abington on Friday October 3rd 2008 and one would almost think it was just another day until you got within two miles of the Senior High School where frenzied preparations were under way for a visit from what many would consider a special man.
Buses from neighboring schools, people from all walks of life, news media from across the country and the ever present Secret Service were all waiting for the arrival of Presidential nominee Barack Obama who was slated to speak before a crowd of more than five thousand in a few short hours.
The anticipation was nothing short of electric and as always the CALM society had members who were at the front of it all. C.A.L.M’s founder Andrea Trainer who is also a School Board Director in Abington was treated with VIP passes along with C.A.L.M’s Treasurer Robyn Tucker who is the current President of Abington’s Parent Council. Both were mere feet away from the candidate and were able to speak with and shake his hands after his speech.
Barack spoke of the state of disrepair our country was in, unemployment up across the nation with over seven thousand in Pennsylvania alone. He spoke of education and what he would do for children going off to college. He promised teachers he would ensure that schools were better funded and the list goes on. As always, many members of the C.A.L.M. society were in the audience and they all left with the feeling they witnessed something historic.
The crowd went wild before, during and after his speech and it was a morning many would not soon forget!
